Marie Antoinette: The World's First "Celebutant"
'Marie Antoinette', the new Sofia Coppola film opens today and in my opinion, officially kicks off the Fall movie season. I mean, you wouldn't expect her to have a movie open in May, would you?It seems the older (and wiser?) I get, the longer in the year I have to wait for movies that really appeal to me on more than a superficial level. Although there were a couple (like two) gems this year, '06 has more or less been a drag (on that note, there was a screening of 'Hedwig' at the ENZIAN this summer).
Now is this the result of the evolution of the filmmaking process? The one where tighter production schedules, monster marketing budgets, and focus groups have taken hold, pushing artistry and experimentation to the bottom of the list?
I have a theory that Kubrick didn't actually die because of natural causes, but that he just decided to stop breathing when he realized the days of forty takes and a two year edit session were a thing of the past.
Well, here's to what will hopefully be an award winning Fall movie season. Let's hear what you thought about 'Marie Antoinette' and maybe offer some insights into where movies are headed in the forseeable future.

What an epic weekend of movie watching; 'Marie Antoinette', 'Flags of Our Fathers', and 'The Prestige' in two days.
I have to say I am in love with Sofia's movie making skills. She gets caught up more in the character than in the story, which is how I'd do it, if I had been born into filmmaking royalty.
Coppola pretty much sticks with the same theme of her previous work, with the lonely and isolated young girl who tries to cope with the world around her. I'd venture to guess that this is all very personal stuff for Sofia, and she injects her own experiences and feelings into whatever story she is trying to tell, and that's why it comes off so genuinely.
The anachronistic soundtrack is introduced gradually, and when it went full force, I felt like I was back in high school pining after my new wave sweetheart, memorizing Robert Smith lyrics.
The imagery of Marie playing in the garden with her daughter rivals that of the great Terrence Malick, one of my all-time favorite directors, and that was the point where I was completely sold to the fact that Coppola has made the A-list.
I would also like to mention that I thought this was Kirsten Dunst's best performance ever. My wife says she read in an interview that Kirsten was just being herself. Well, whatever she did, it worked.
Petey and Erin, I'm looking forward to your reviews. My guess is that Erin didn't like it so much, and that Petey will be obsessing over it for weeks!

Ok I saw Marie Antoinette.. are people blind here? The movie STUNK by epic proportions. 3/4 of the movie wavers around whether that boring guy she married is gay or not.. who cares..that could have been tied up in short time.. The fease is for the eyes..and I wonder this.. how can they get someone THAT UGLY to play Marie? Are they SIRIUS.. N Please.. this is a joke. The songs were also not that interesting...
